United Black Players of the USL Introduce Groundbreaking Coaching Subsidies Program

The United Black Players (UBP) of the United Soccer League (USL) is proud to announce the launch of a pioneering initiative aimed at supporting the development and advancement of black players within the league. The newly unveiled Coaching Subsidies Program will provide vital financial assistance to black players aspiring to obtain their coaching licenses, empowering them to excel both on and off the field.

The UBP Coaching Subsidies Program is designed to break down barriers and create opportunities for black players to transition into coaching roles within the soccer community. Recognizing the underrepresentation of black coaches in the sport, this groundbreaking program aims to foster greater diversity and inclusivity in coaching positions throughout the USL.

“Representation matters, and we believe it is crucial to have black voices and perspectives represented at all levels of the game,” stated Brandon Miller, Executive Director of the United Black Players. “By launching the Coaching Subsidies Program, we are taking a proactive step towards addressing the lack of diversity within coaching ranks. Our goal is to provide black players with the necessary resources and support to obtain coaching licenses, enabling them to make a lasting impact within the soccer community.”

The Coaching Subsidies Program will offer financial assistance to help cover the costs associated with coaching courses, including registration fees, study materials, and examination expenses. Through this program, UBP aims to alleviate the financial burden often faced by players seeking coaching qualifications and create a more inclusive pathway for their career progression. To launch the program, the group worked with the Oakland Roots Sports  Club to award the first scholarship to current player Joseph Nane.

“It’s an honor to have the support of the United Black Players as I pursue my coaching licenses,” said Joseph Nane. “Representation in all aspects of our game is vital and I hope to bring my experiences as a player to the next generation as a coach.”

The United Black Players of the USL encourages all black players within the league to seize this opportunity and apply for the Coaching Subsidies Program. By equipping black players with the tools and resources needed to pursue coaching licenses, the program aims to enhance their professional development and broaden their impact beyond the playing field.

As a strong advocate for equality and diversity, the USL has expressed its full support for the UBP Coaching Subsidies Program. The league recognizes the importance of fostering a more representative coaching community and has committed to working closely with the United Black Players in implementing, funding and expanding this initiative.
